Get Involved

Since its inception in 1988, the Canadian Association for Porphyria has progressed from a small rural organization into an international resource for porphyric patients. CAP provides invaluable resources for porphyrics, their loved ones, health care professionals, and medical researchers. Without the generosity of our donors, it would be impossible to continue our efforts to “improve the quality of life for people affected by porphyria”.  Please help us carry out our mission by making financial contributions, volunteering your time, supporting our programs, and spreading awareness.

Honour a Loved One
Make their day memorable… This year, give a gift that will last…
Instead of buying a gift for your loved one for their birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion, make a donation in honour of (or in memory of) them to the Canadian Association for Porphyria. Gifts received will be used to pursue the goals of the association, including our mission of “improving the quality of life for people affected by porphyria” through education, information, advocacy and support. Click here for information on making a donation! Thank you for remembering CAP and honouring that special person in this unique way!
Registered Charity Number 11883 5305 RR0001; Tax receipts issued for gifts of $10 or more.

Plan a Community Event
Suggest that a community fundraiser, such as a curling bonspiel, golf tournament or concert, donates proceeds towards CAP programs, or organize your own event! Contact us to get started!

Promote Awareness and Advocacy
Become one of our volunteer pamphlet distributors! Ask if our informational pamphlets on porphyria can be displayed at places in your community, such as doctors’ offices, hospitals, pharmacies, and medical clinics, or display them in your own office. Contact us to get started!

Patient Registry
There is strength in numbers…
In our office, we keep a confidential database containing a registry of diagnosed individuals. (Please see our Privacy Policy.) We find that when applying for funding and promoting awareness, it is helpful to know how many people we are giving support to. Our registry is also useful in compiling statistics. If you have been diagnosed with porphyria, and would like to be added to our confidential registry, please contact us.

Sell/Buy Raffle Tickets or Cookbooks
Every spring/summer, we hold a national raffle, with lots of great prizes each year. In the past, people have won TVs, barbeques, gift cards, cameras and much more! Tickets are $1 each, and come in booklets of 15. If you’re interested in selling raffle tickets in your area, or purchasing some, please contact us!

We have also published two cookbooks, Our Favourite Recipes Cookbook ($10*) and Family and Friends Cookbook ($12*). Both make excellent gifts! If you would like to sell cookbooks to people in your community, or purchase one for yourself or someone else, please let us know. For payment options, click here. *There is an additional $3 shipping and handling fee for each cookbook.

Celebrate National Porphyria Day (June 1st)
Beginning in 2005, National Porphyria Day has been celebrated each year on June 1st. Events take place all across Canada to help commemorate this special day.

Background: Thanks to a family in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, June 1st is National Porphyria Day. June 1st is the birth date of their daughter who was born with VP, a type of sun-sensitive porphyria. Her brother and father have VP as well. It was this family's suggestion of June 1st that inspired Canada's date for National Porphyria Day. England and Sweden have followed suit with the same date.
National Porphyria Day is a great opportunity to promote awareness. If you would like to host a support group meeting, plan a fundraising event, or help educate the people in your area about porphyria, please contact us for free educational material to distribute or posters to advertise your event.
Also, each year on National Porphyria Day, the Canadian Association for Porphyria holds an open house at their National Head Office, located at 487 Walker Avenue, Neepawa, Manitoba.  All are welcome to attend, and refreshments are provided. If you happen to be in the area, please join us!
